Song Lyric Sunday (8/5/18) – Drink

Helen’s prompt for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday is the word drink. There was a fleeting moment, initially, when I thought this might not go easy. My mind started to race, and then it came to me.

My selection for this week is a song from The Who and their album Quadrophenia, which is an amazing album and story. From Wikipedia:

Quadrophenia is the sixth studio album by the English rock band The Who, released as a double album on 26 October 1973 by Track Records. It is the group’s second rock opera. The story follows a young mod named Jimmy and his search for self-worth and importance, set in London and Brighton in 1965. It is the only Who album to be entirely composed by Pete Townshend.

My choice from this album is a song about redemption. Again from Wikipedia:

“Love, Reign o’er Me” concerns the main character of Quadrophenia, Jimmy, having a personal crisis. With nothing left to live for, he finds a spiritual redemption in pouring rain. As Townshend described the song:
[It] refers to Meher Baba‘s one time comment that rain was a blessing from God; that thunder was God’s Voice. It’s another plea to drown, only this time in the rain. Jimmy goes through a suicide crisis. He surrenders to the inevitable, and you know, you know, when it’s over and he goes back to town he’ll be going through the same shit, being in the same terrible family situation and so on, but he’s moved up a level. He’s weak still, but there’s a strength in that weakness. He’s in danger of maturing.[2]

I really love the way Pete played the words rain and reign against each other. So, I present to you all the song Love Reign O’er Me.

Only love can make it rain
The way the beach is kissed by the sea
Only love can make it rain
Like the sweat of lovers layin’ in the fields

Love, reign o’er me
Love, reign o’er me
Rain on me, rain on me

Only love can bring the rain
That makes you yearn to the sky
Only love can bring the rain
That falls like tears from on high

Love, reign o’er me
Rain on me, rain on me
Love, reign o’er me
Rain on me, rain on me

On the dry and dusty road
The nights we spend apart alone
I need to get back home to cool, cool rain

I can’t sleep, and I lay, and I think
The night is hot and black as ink
Oh God, I need a drink of cool, cool rain

Love, reign o’er me
Reign o’er me, o’er me, o’er me
Love, reign o’er me, o’er me
Love

    1. That is wonderful to hear. I would imagine there are some tracks off the album Who’s Next that would surprise you as well. That album has some very well known one’s like Baba O’reily (teenage wasteland), Won’t Get Fooled Again, and Behind Blue Eyes. There are some really incredible ones that many don’t know as well.
