Rush Reboot – Countdown (1982)

I didn’t realize that I missed posting a reboot for last week. For all the loyal followers of this part of my (all over the place) blog I do apologize. OK, I think that takes care of the 10 or so of you.

Interestingly, though, I am going to piggy-back off a Song Lyric Sunday mis-prompt from yesterday. Helen posted that the prompt was to be the word smile. Unfortunately, she later revealed it should have been simile. While I told her that would have been a problem, I think I can solve the conundrum with this Reboot. So as this Reboot spans two weeks, I am also going to let it span two posts and two blogs. Especially fitting since there are two examples of direct simile in this Rush song.

There! I think that will do to satisfy the prompt.

I am pretty certain you can figure out the meaning of this song. Just in case, though, the video will spell it out for you. Here is the song Countdown from the album Signals.

Music: Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson
Lyrics: Neil Peart

Lit up with anticipation
We arrive at the launching site
The sky is still dark, nearing dawn
On the Florida coastline

Circling choppers slash the night
With roving searchlight beams
This magic day when super-science
Mingles with the bright stuff of dreams

Floodlit in the hazy distance
The star of this unearthly show
Venting vapours (sic), like the breath
Of a sleeping white dragon

Crackling speakers, voices tense
Resume the final count
All systems check, T minus nine
As the sun and the drama start to mount

The air is charged — a humid, motionless mass
The crowds and the cameras,
The cars full of spectators pass
Excitement so thick — you could cut it with a knife
Technology — high, on the leading edge of life

The earth beneath us starts to tremble
With the spreading of a low black cloud
A thunderous roar shakes the air
Like the whole world exploding

Scorching blast of golden fire
As it slowly leaves the ground
Tears away with a mighty force
The air is shattered by the awesome sound

Like a pillar of cloud, the smoke lingers
High in the air
In fascination — with the eyes of the world
We stare…

      1. I’ve always wondered why dragons, and other “intelligent” creatures, can’t choose their own alignment, like humans and demi-humans can. Couldn’t there theoretically be a LG White Dragon? 🤔

        Great song, btw!

  1. I played a few Rush songs for my son… he’s fourteen and listens to a lot of music from this era. Unfortunately, I found out he only picks songs that are fun to sing along to. I’m not sure if Rush fits that category, but I do enjoy them regardless. Perhaps he will change his mind in a few years? Great song… I haven’t heard it in ages. 🙂
