Song Lyric Sunday (4/15/18) – Stay

Helen’s prompt for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday is the word stay. My selection this week does not have the word stay in the title or lyrics. While searching for a songs for this week’s prompt I thought about the many ways that word can impact someone. I came upon a favorite song of mine by 70’s soft-rock legends Bread and songwriter David Gates. This is a song he wrote after his father passed. It hit home with me. Even though I got to say what I wanted….I still wish he was here.

Take advantage if you can.

You sheltered me from harm.
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, Set me free
The finest years I ever knew
were all the years I had with you

I would give anything I own,
Give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own,
just to have you back again.

You taught me how to love,
What it’s all, what it’s all.
You never said too much,
but still you showed the way,
And I knew from watching you.
Nobody else could ever know
The part of me that can’t let go.

I would give anything I own,
Give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again.

Is there someone you know,
you’re loving them so,
but taking them all for granted.
You may lose them one day,
someone takes them away,
and they don’t hear the words you long to say

I would give anything I own,
Give up my life, my heart, my home.
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again.
Just to touch you once again

    1. Thank you, Walt. I didn’t either until I did some research. I always guessed it was about a girl he lost, which shows you I didn’t really pay too close attention to the lyrics.

Which is why Helen’s weekly prompt is so nice.

  1. We often jump to conclusions, that these kinds of songs are about romantic love. I love learning the meaning behind a song, even if sometimes it’s nice to leave it ambiguous too.

Sweet little song. Thanks for sharing. I still have my father, but I am not taking that for granted. Life is unpredictable.

  2. Beautiful song, and now even more so, to learn of the reason he was singing it. It’s funny how the lyrics just come back to me, even though I haven’t heard it in a long time. We used to have an 8-Track player in our Mustang, and this group’s songs we’d play all the time.
