Song Lyric Sunday (3/18/18) – Shadows

Helen’s prompt for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday is the word shadows. There were a few ways I let her challenge take me. I drifted to this song…or that one. I started doing some lyric searches for some that I couldn’t remember all the words, because I thought the word shadow was in there. As so often happens, though, I land on a fave of mine and begin to settle into it. I think of her prompt and how the song may fit.

The song I have chosen for this week is from one my top 3 bands of all time. This song is about death. There is no escaping it. But death is a part of life. The cycle that we all face. Some call the afterlife the shadows, depending on your beliefs.

While it is better to understand this song in the context of the album, that is not what this blog challenge is about. So, from the album Days of Future Passed, I give you the song Nights in White Satin. I am also including the poem that follows depending on what you listen to. It is called The Late Lament.

Nights in white satin, never reaching the end,
Letters I’ve written, never meaning to send.
Beauty I’d always missed with these eyes before.
Just what the truth is, I can’t say anymore.

Cause I love you, yes I love you, oh how I love you.

Gazing at people, some hand in hand,
Just what I’m going through they can’t understand.
Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend,
Just what you want to be, you will be in the end.

And I love you, yes I love you,
Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.

Nights in white satin, never reaching the end,
Letters I’ve written, never meaning to send.
Beauty I’ve always missed, with these eyes before.
Just what the truth is, I can’t say anymore.

Cause I love you, yes I love you,
Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.
Cause I love you, yes I love you,
Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.

The Late Lament
Breath deep
The gathering gloom
Watch lights fade
From every room
Bedsitter people
Look back and lament
Another day’s useless
Energy spent

Impassioned lovers
Wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love
And has none
New mother picks up
And suckles her son
Senior citizens
Wish they were young

Cold hearted orb
That rules the night
Removes the colours
From our sight
Red is gray and
Yellow white
But we decide
Which is right
And
Which is an Illusion

  1. I heard this song so many times but I never really listened to it. So many layers, so tender and passionate, so sensual.
Just what the truth is, I can’t say anymore.
    Cause I love you

I mean, how beautifully simple is that. Or simply beautiful?!
Either way, it is very soothing, like alone time over coffee on Sunday morning.

  2. I love this song, in fact it’s one of my all time favourites that I love to play and sing on my guitar. So passionate and full of power. Thank you for stirring me this Monday morning.

      1. I’ve been uber busy trying to do too many things in too little time! I see the end of the rainbow though.

It really is one of my all time favorite songs. I just get lost in it’s beauty.
