Song Lyric Sunday 9/10/2017 The Anarchist

This is my first foray into Song Lyric Sunday. Helen’s prompt this week is to post a song about revenge or vengeance. For those that have been following me, you know I am a huge Rush fan. I do a weekly post called Rush Reboot where I post lyrics and a  video to try and expose others to the very diverse catalogue that is their discography. This is from their 20th and possibly final studio album released in 2012. The band returned to much heavier roots and thematic elements for this album, touching on themes of control, independence, and journeys.

The Anarchist

Available on Clockwork Angels

Music: Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson
Lyrics: Neil Peart

WALKING AMONG THE PEOPLE – who are so content, so blind – the Anarchist hears the pedlar’s call, and sneers derisively. “What do I lack? Ah … vengeance?”

Will there be world enough and time for me to sing that song?
A voice so silent for so long
For all those years I had to get along, they told me I was wrong
I never wanted to belong – I was so strong

I lack their smiles and their diamonds; I lack their happiness and love
I envy them for all those things, I never got my fair share of

The lenses inside of me that paint the world black
The pools of poison, the scarlet mist, that spill over into rage
The things I’ve always been denied
An early promise that somehow died
A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage

In all your science of the mind, seeking blind through flesh and bone
Find the blood inside this stone
What I know, I’ve never shown; what I feel, I’ve always known
I plan my vengeance on my own – and I was always alone

Oh – They tried to get me
Oh – They’ll never forget me

    1. Thanks…been wanting to participate and finally did it all today. BTW do we get the topic sent to us because we follow her? Also, how are you all doing over there. Sorry it’s hitting your state but can’t say I ever want to go through something like Katrina again.

      1. You’ll get her prompt if you follow her via email. Our area looks like we’ll just get some minor wind and rain unless Irma the Bitch turns more westerly. I don’t think anyone will ever forget Katrina. The year before, we went through Ivan. Our town looked like someone dropped a bomb on it. Seems like everyone is better prepared nowadays.

  1. My boyfriend in high school was a HUGE Rush fan and I was into them for a while. I had no idea they were still putting out new music, but this is so them!

It’s great to see a newcomer to SLS. Thanks so much for playing along. I hope to see you again soon!

    1. I am happy to be here. The album for this SLS was actually their first trip back to writing a concept since the Hemispheres album back in 1978. I will probably be able to use a good bit of their songs in SLS, but I promise to branch out. 🙂
